US Open: Day 5

Hey Y'all. Galileo here.

The US Open has taken it's toll and I am exhausted, so my apologies but this update will be rather shorter than usual.

The Bryans thrashed Butorac and Nielsen and sixteenth seeds Huey/Inglot also came through in two easy sets. Sixth seeds Bopanna and Vasselin cruised, too, against a pair of Americans. Llodra and Mahut were too strong for Fognini/Ramos and the pairing of Nestor/Pospisil advanced too and they will play the Bryans. Fleming/Marray weren't pushed too hard by Lindstedt/Harrison. Dodig/Melo also came through in two sets against Begemann and Emmrich of Germany.

Before I fall asleep, the singles...

BLOCKBUSTER BUST-UP: Hewitt d. del Potro, AUS/ARG
...Hewitt knows how to win and how to beat the top players. He did it to Delpo at Wimby back in '09 at this stage, which was the last slam quarterfinal he made. But now, the draw's opened up. He plays Donskoy then probably Haas, and those are winnable matches, too. I know he wants that quarterfinal more than anything. He still has desire and fight and spirit, but the issue as it always is with Hewitt is the body. Can it hold up?

Anyway, he took four hours and three minutes to finally defeat Delpo 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 and 6-1. He won that breaker 7-2. He was 10-7 and 42-43 with regards to the ratios. His opponent was 8-11 and an astonishing 41-70. Hewitt was too solid and too clever for the big man from the back of the court and even managed to hit more winners. I think Hewitt could make the quarters, but only time will tell.

ROSOL MOMENT: Marcos Baghdatis, CYP
...The mighty Baghdatis needed just 85 minutes to dispatch Anderson 6-2,6-2,6-2. The flashy Cypriot was 10-6 and 34-13, which are very strong statistics. Anderson was 7-4 and 17-19. The talented Marcos has been in and out of form but it appears he has found some here. His next opponent is Wawrinka, which will be a fantastic match. How long before his body gives in and he has no more energy, though?
=============================
BLINK AND YOU MISS IT: Deniz Istomin/Tobias Kamke, UZB/GER
...It took the Uzbeki just over a hundred minutes to dismiss Kamke. With 6-3 in both aces and winners compared to his opponent's 3-5 in both and 80 per cent of first serve points won. He was the better player according to statistics. He had 7 breaks to 2 though his opponent had 100 per cent in his break points converted compared to his 54 per cent. Anyway, this is not a thrashing that was easily predictable but Istomin is a very steady, talented player who gives you nothing but can still be aggressive. The Uzbeki number one plays [20] Seppi next and that is a winnable match.
=============================
ELVIS AWARD: Marcel Granollers, ESP
...Ram comfortably took the first two sets 6-3, 6-4 and looked to be in the driver's seat before the Spaniard fought back. He took the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 and the final set 7-5. It took him three hours and twenty minutes to finally beat Ram, but he finished with very impressive ratios of 14-4 and 57-29 whilst his opponent ended up with 11-2 and 38-45. Granollers also won twenty more points than his opponent and yet again showed his fighting spirit. He goes through to face Smyczek.
=============================
HOME GROWN HERO: Jack Sock , USA
...The American came through in five against Bogomolov Jr. 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 in one minute under four hours. He played a really very aggressive game with impressive ratios of 21-3 and 68-60. His opponent could only manage 8-9 and 39-42. He broke five times, one less than his Russian opponent, but then again it was only one break. Bogomolov actually won more points, 173 to 169, and more games, as well. It was a funny match, but generally speaking at this Open the US underdogs have been performing well.
