US Open: Day 11

Hey Y'all. Galileo here.

I know you have all been waiting for the Wheelchair Quad Singles to start. Forget Djokovic and Nadal, the Wheelchair Quad singles is where all the action is. Anyway, top seeded American David Wagner defeated British second seed Lapthorn 6-3, 6-1 whilst Sithole of RSA beat American Taylor 6-2, 6-2.

In the Wheelchair Mens singles proper, top seeded Kuneida of Japan beat Argentina's Fernandez. Second seed Houdet of France cruised 6-0, 6-2. Also through is Frenchman Jeremiasz and Brit Reid.

The McEnroes defeated Pioline and Wilander in the mens champion doubles 6-4, 6-4.

In the boys doubles, the last two seeds fell. The eighth seeds, Quinzi and Kokkinakis, lost 6-2, 7-6 [7] to Halys/Silva the Franco-Portuguese combination. The sixth seeds did not do as well as the eighth seeds. Rublev and Zverev crashed out to Maichrzak [Poland] and Redlicki[USA] 6-1, 6-1.

In the boys singles, Zverev came through without difficulties against the boy who beat him in doubles (Redlicki) 6-4, 6-3. Quinzi cantered past American Brymer 6-2, 6-3. Halys dismissed Nishioka the eighth seed 6-2, 6-0. In an all-seeded clash, Garin the third seeded Chilean had no troubles against Geens the Belgian thirteenth seed. He beat him 6-2, 6-3. In a closer match, the French eighth seed Tatlot was tested but came through 7-6 [7], 6-3. Coric won 6-4, 6-2 and Kokkinakis also came through but in three sets.

Now, some match reviews. There are four today.

Doubles: PEYA/SOARES d. DODIG/MELO AUT,BRA/CRO,BRA
...The two best Brazilian doubles players in the world faced off here and that ensured there would be a Brazilian in the final. It was the second seeds who were too strong this time, however, as they won 7-5, 6-4 in 83 minutes. The second seeds were much too strong for them overall. The second seeds had ok stats of 1-5 and 27-12 overall and their opponents had stats of 2-2 and 22-9 overall. The second seeds broke three times from five opportunities whilst their opponents broke once from three opportunities. Peya and Soares will need to improve on a couple of areas, but overall it was a pretty good performance. They will go through to face either the Bryans or Paes/Stepanek- a foregone conclusion...?
=============================
Doubles: PAES/STEPANEK d. BRYANS IND,CZE/USA
..The Bryans will not win four slams on the bounce, plus the Olympics. Not this time. Despite losing the opening set in just 29 minutes, the fourth seeded veterans came back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in an hour and fifty-one minutes. This is an upset, but then again Paes is an extremely talented doubles player, as is Stepsy. The fourth seeds had tremendous stats of 3-5 and 42-12 overall. The Bryans were more modest with 2-2 and 29-3 overall. The Bryans won 83 points, four less than their opponents. It was an absolutely stellar match played by the fourth seeds. Such a performance was needed to knock the Bryans off their lofty perch. Anyway, they are yet again the underdogs, at least by seeding, in the final though I think they might actually be slight favourites. Only time will tell.

Singles: DJOKOVIC d. YOUZHNY SRB/RUS
...Neither of the men's matches were really edge of your seat stuff, but both were surprising in their own way. Youzhny nabbed a set, which surprised me, but what Vavsy did surprised me even more. If the Djoker had lost, I think he would have lost his number one ranking, though that looks inevitable now. He should cling on to it after the Open, especially if he can win his semifinal, which he should do. Anyway, he beat the Russian in four sets, in two hours and thirty four minutes. He won the first two rather straightforwardly 6-3, 6-2 but then dropped the third 6-3. With the match poised delicately, Djokovic turned it on. He blew past Youzhny 6-0 in the fourth for a fourteenth consecutive semifinal at slam level. I think Federer's twenty-three straight is somewhat out of reach, however. The Russian had awful stats of 2-4 and 15-31 overall but you have to go for your shots in matches like this. Djokovic also had subpar stats with 5-1 and 32-45 overall. It was a scrappy match but Djokovic only let his opponent have two breaks from ten opportunities while had took seven breaks from 12 chances. He had a mid-match lapse, but apart from that he looked far better than his opponent. He should go on to play Murray, who would surely outclass the Swiss number two.
=============================
Singles: WAWRINKA d. MURRAY SUI/GBR
...I think this is the end for Murray's number #1 aspirations this year, and perhaps possibly for good, and it wasn't pretty. He really crashed and burned. Wawrinka played a good match, I'm not taking that away from him, but here the stats don't lie. The Swiss won in two hours fifteen minutes 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2. Murray never even had a break point and was 5-4 in aces and 15-30 overall. Those are really poor. His second serve average speed was just 84 MPH and he looked disinterested at times and downright poor at others. This is why he isn't in the same league as Nadal and Djokovic yet- he can just have a bad tournament or a bad run of form. He has not been great all summer and he has had a poor US Open, losing sets to players he shouldn't and he has looked vulnerable, too. Wawrinka played some great tennis, with decent stats of 4-4 and 45-37. He hit his backhand well and won 46 per cent of receiving points. He also came to net 42 times and won 31 of those points, not to mention the fact he had 11 break points and took four of them. He just playd better on the day and I think he could test Djokovic.

I say Djokovic and Nadal both come through in four sets.
